Please consider coming to Turtle Haven for a December Solstice benefit for the trees. Please register as early as possible, as I am hoping this will be a full class.

 DEAR FRIENDS,
PLEASE TAKE JUST A FEW MOMENTS, IF YOU HAVE NOT, TO SIGN ON AND HELP SAVE A BEAUTIFUL OLDER FOREST HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTY! SEE ALL THE DETAILS BELOW FROM TODAY’S EMAIL FROM THE CENTER FOR RESPONSIBLE FORESTRY! OUR INDIVIDUAL ACTIONS CAN TRULY MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WITH GRATITUDE FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION, ELIZABETH
Dear Whatcom County Forest Defender, We need your help to protect our county’s mature forests! The State Legislature has allocated $70 million to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to buy new forestland and conserve 2,000 acres of mature forests. Whatcom County Council is already on board, having sent a letter to DNR asking for the “Brokedown Palace” timber sale to be considered for the program. However, DNR has expressed its reluctance to include any upcoming timber sales scheduled for the next 2 years. This means that the mature forests most at risk of getting clearcut and converted to timber plantations won’t be protected by this conservation program. Our biggest priority is conserving 40 acres of mature forest within the Brokedown Palace timber sale. Most of you have heard of this sale and took action earlier this year to cancel it. We were successful in pausing it after the DNR and County Council received thousands of emails from you!  Now we need to ensure that this precious forest receives permanent protection. In the coming days, DNR will present a preliminary list of mature forests for conservation to Whatcom County Council. This is a crucial moment, as the Council will have the opportunity to either agree with DNR’s list or propose other parcels that should be included. We need to remind the Council that Brokedown Palace is important to our community, and request that they advocate for its inclusion in the 2,000 acres.  Two other timber sales with mature forests are on the chopping block in the next two years: “Malua” and “Retirement.” We need to encourage the Council to request that they be included as well.  To make it easy, we’ve prepared a prewritten email that you can send to Whatcom County Council, urging them to support this important cause. Just click the “Take Action” button below to make your voice heard.
Take Action
In addition to keeping our water clean, protecting salmon-bearing streams, and making us more resilient to wildfire and flooding, mature forests keep carbon out of our atmosphere, but thousands of acres are up for harvesting this year and next. Let’s work together to protect our natural treasures and ensure a sustainable future for Whatcom County. Our mature forests are worth saving, and your support can make a difference. With gratitude, Brel Froebe Executive Director Center for Responsible Forestry
